Improve your 10-pin bowling technique with these 4 tips

Bowling is more than just a fun activity; it's a sport that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age. Whether you're a parent looking to bond with your kids, a teenager out with friends after school, or a senior having fun with your neighborhood chums on the weekend, bowling offers a great time for everyone.

But if you want to take your game to the next level or are wondering how to get better at bowling, don’t worry. We've got some valuable tips to help you score strikes and spares consistently.

1. Ensure you have a proper grip on the right ball.

Before you send that bowling ball rolling down the lane, start with the basics - your grip and the weight of the ball. A ball that’s too heavy will interfere with your grip, while a ball that’s too light may be difficult to aim accurately.

Ensure your fingers are comfortably inserted into the ball's holes. They shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, and you shouldn’t need to squeeze your finger or thumb to get a good hold. A good grip sets the foundation for a successful throw and can be the difference between a gutter ball and a spare. If you feel ‘off’ with one ball, try different sizes and weights until you find the perfect fit.

2. Aim for success.

Now that you've got your grip sorted, it's time to aim. Find a focal point on the bowling lane, something like the dots or arrows. It’s usually recommended to aim for a point just off-center, with right-handers aiming towards the right and left-handers aiming towards the left.

3. Build your power – and think about timing.

Generating power in bowling isn't about brute force; it's about precision and timing. A consistent and controlled approach to the start of the lane will help you build the momentum needed for a powerful throw. As you approach the foul line, remember to maintain a smooth and balanced motion and release the ball at the right moment in your forward swing for maximum impact.

4. Follow through on the release.

Finally, we get to the part where the magic happens! Focus on your hand's position as you release the bowling ball. Your fingers should exit the ball first, followed by your thumb. A clean release ensures that the ball's rotation is consistent, improving accuracy. Keep your wrist firm but not stiff, and keep your arm pointing toward the center of the pins as you follow through. The goal is to have a smooth and controlled release rather than a jerky one.
